Some Thoughts on Language

Langue d`oc is all those languages that say OC (Yes) and langue d `oil is all those languages that say Oil (Oui). sO, THAT INCLUDES Provencal. (I think!)

One of the little fella`s round here testing his English tried to call me `M_ F_`from his balcony. It seems at 13, they may have heard that word.

Should I have corrected his English by explaining the American Jive version: `Mo__ FO__.`

After thinking about it, I have decided to reprove him gently by not talking to him.

They probably all get away with murder with what they say to me now also because they say it in a form of Janito, which is a dialect of Spanish very, very different from Espanol/Castilliano. i also spend some time with the little guys, so serve me right.

What is a language anyway? I speak lots of them and I still don`t know. I guess agua/aqua is water. If you take the ag off, you`re left with wa and er is a very prolific suffix usually meaning a noun doing something (runner etc) Eau is probably aqua is probably a- qua or (ak)wa.

Catalan, now. Is that a language? And Gallegos? They`re very similar to Spanish, though no more so than Norwegian/Swedish are similar to Danish. And Spanish and Italian (Portuguese?) are just about intelligible, if you speak them slowly and each knows a bit of the other.

Janito apparently, which they speak in Gibralter and probably in La Linea, the passport being introduced in the mid-19th century (?), has a lot of words from Genoese and Maltese, both languages still spoken.

I go for idioma. It is a word that means language but unlike lengua (tongue) and dialecto, is somewhere a bit between. So, Catalan and Janito are idiomas.

But what is an idioma? We don`t have a word for it in English and our word idiom in English means something quite different. I guess Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi are idiomas because the Pakistanis I speak to here seem to have picked them up quite easily.

Some thoughts of an old man in a dry season waiting for rain. TS Eliot, the greatest English poet (oops American?) who ever lived.

CHARLES FREDRICKSON: Why can`t we be Friends?!

The overriding theme of the very well-organized Incheon Asian Games "One Asia" celebrated a festival of sports promoting multiversity and cross-cultural sensitivity, fostering new friendship bonds, actualizing applied life experiences and broadening global horizons. The Asian Games featured more thrills, chills and spills than a soap opera melodrama. The lyrics which dominated my enthralled loopy mindset brainwaves were: "Why can`t we be friends, Why can`t we be friends?!" Against all odds, affirmative can do, will do cooperative optimistic attitudes prevailed. North Korea`s active involvement and participation could possibly pave the way for unification. In the enigmatic Middle East, where widespread hatred and fear are all too common, it was heartening to see the national support for athletics from the governments of Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, U.A.E., Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, temporarily putting aside Sunni vs. Shi`ite divisive religious and political beliefs in favor of common cause unity. The best way of destroying enemies is making them friends.

Dr Charles Fredrickson: POSITIVE VIBES

A great attitude becomes a
Good day which becomes a
Great week month year decade
Resulting in a great life

Attitude is based on how
We are treated by others
I`m only responsible for what`s
Said not for what`s understood

Life is good smile laugh
Be grateful for gleeful joy
Life is best for those
Who simply enjoy it graciously

Positive thinking attitudes reflect prosperity
Inner peace facing external challenges
Exposing us to daunting challenges
Leading to worthy successful achievements

Mental attitude reduces emotional distress
Depending less on fallen mood
Swings more on positive intentions
Tender mercy kindness compassionate actions

A bad attitude is like
A flat tire if you
Don`t change it you`re stuck
Where you are going nowhere

Remember happiness doesn`t depend upon
Who you are or what
You have it depends solely
On your positive thinking perspective

Dr Charles Fredrickson: Reform

Reform means the improvement or amendment of what is wrong. Reform is basically fine-tuning, distinguished from revolution or radical change. Reform begins with self-reform, setting achievable goals, standards and expectations which aim to improve society, honing unfair discrepancies in the social system which are characterised by inequality, bias and discrimination. In our uncertain, quickly changing world, promoting mutual respect, moral ethics, tolerance, multiversity, constructive criticism and free expression must be openly encouraged. Reform must come from within, not without, emphasising "can do", "will do" positives rather than negative "can`t do" mindsets. Those involved with implementing reform should be reminded that the major obstacles they will face will most likely be indifference, apathy and complacency. Five quotes to help guide and inspire the progressive thinking and insightful outlooks of reformists:

_ "We are having this liberty in order to transform our social system, which is full of inequality, discrimination and other things, which conflict with our fundamental rights." (B R Ambedkar)

_ "To reform means to shatter one form and to create another, but the two sides of this act are not always equally intended nor equally successful." (George Santayana)

_ "Education is not to reform students or amuse them or make them excellent technicians. It is to unsettle their minds, widen their horizons, teach them to think straight, if possible." (Robert M. Hutchins)

_ "As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberty." (George Washington)

_ "Freedom is absolutely necessary for the progress in science and the liberal arts." (Baruch Spinoza)

Peter Xavier: "Lead poisoning"

you don`t know that old paint is poison
your skin was black
before it was golden since
it`s always thick when

PEOPLE ARE LAYERED—
our insides squeeze past gator skin:
eruptions erode the surface with
nothing left to spill but
a truth within tectonic plates below

this tundra—
remind me of warmer days when
moisture and expansion were
exposure while
tears made their way through your temple from

hidden places—
I long for solace in your summer solstice—
I recline beneath and drink

in blindness:
nothing feels right and
must be the only right I have?
lead is dark and

depressing—
we forgot who we were:
everyone becomes a turning and twisting of events

JAMES OTIS` NIGHTMARE

Dear Gerard Baker:

The Gentlemen of the Rockaway Park Philosophical Society bid you greetings. Prior to the precipitous decline of the Journal into a more cumbersome version of the drivel driven tabloids, some of our members formerly read the Wall Street Journal for inspiration before preparing most scholarly tracts.

When we had previously written you with regard to Lietzau, OBAMA DOESN`T GET GITMO WSJ 3.13.14 p A15, we expressed the view that publication of Mr Lietzau`s item was a reason why US news media to the discerning reader is treated as somewhat less credible than commercial advertising. While Mr Lietzau claimed that the tortures administered by US civilians and military were "mythological" and that the miscreants who administered the unspeakable treatments were "punished," only a female enlisted woman, a Specialist 4 and her companions were court-martialed for noxious behavior. The only other persons punished were Bradley Manning who was court-martialed, Julian Assange now a refugee in The Ecuadorian embassy in London and Edward Snowden now given asylum by the Russian Federation. Their crimes: disclosing US war Crimes. We concluded that Mr Lietzau`s title "Secretary for rule of law and detainee policy" was an oxymoron in the contemporary US which have devolved into a state of non-law. The Society had also commented on Ann Zimmerman, Dallas Opens Old Wound, WSJ Thurs 17 October 2013, p A3. Ms Zimmerman thought that Dallas had been a Republican city in 1963. Apparently she had never heard of "The Solid South." There was that nice touch of 1960s rubric describing Dallas as The City of Hate but very little objective analysis of the event.

Most recently we see Devin Barrett HOLDER APPEALS TO WHISTLE BLOWERS WSJ 9.18.14 p C2 as combining the disinformation of the Lietzau piece with the ignorance of the Zimmerman item. The three main "whistleblowers" of the Obama era were Bradley Manning now in jail, Julian Assange now a refugee in The Ecuadorian embassy in London and Edward Snowden now given asylum by the Russian Federation. But they informed the public of the excesses committed by The Regime in the name of the public`s welfare; they were not snitching on their neighbors.

Holder says he has the goods anyway through all his wiretaps which give new meaning to the term "singing wires." (Please don`t use that term with Ms Zimmerman; if she didn`t know that the South was solidly democratic before Richard Nixon, she won`t have a clue about what the term "singing wires" means.) What we see emerging in the US already a state of non-law is James Otis` nightmare of a community of informants where out of jealousy, spite or greed, neighbors rat out each other either in a snit or to curry favor with the authorities. In consequence the life of the community disintegrates.

It is on that note, The Society, bids you A Most Cheery Cherio,

Sincerely,
FOR THE SOCIETY,

JD Collins

Dr Charles Fredickson: Ialamaphobia

Islamophobia is on the rise across the world. Joseph Goebbels` dictum that a lie, if audacious enough and repeated enough times, will be believed by the gullible masses has produced a plethora of bully-rag anti-Arab bigots, subject to brainwashing by the far-right US media. In the US Islamophobia is stoked by right-wing talk-show hosts, firebrand bloggers, evangelical religious leaders ...and politicians, all united by a shady motive to exhume the ghosts of 9/11 and convince their compatriots that Islam is the enemy, undermining a safe and secure future.

The flippancy with which "terrorism" and "violence" are being associated with Muslims is accompanied by smear-and-fear tactics and nasty epithets. When Arabs fight against Israelis, Arabs are deemed guilty of "terrorist violence". When Israelis attack they are engaging in "military reprisals".

In the past, similar scare tactics have been used to create a climate of fear and repression via slogans warning of "reds under your beds" (communism) or the "yellow peril" (China and Japan).

In Thailand and Asean the need for compassionate kindness, fair-minded tolerance, respectful dignity and decency is essential. We must work together to curb distorted views, slander, libel and pure inventions that are fuelling everything from hate speech to arson to fire-bombings against our Muslim friends and neighbours. Newborns do not have innate fear or hate. We must re-teach and re-learn ethical and moral imperatives to ensure a safer, saner and more sustainable peaceful future for one and all.

ed: A US White Liberal stands on two pillars: (a) feeling good about oneself and (b) feeling morally superior. Indeed, following publication of this article you and every other White Liberal have every reason to share in the afterglow of the comforting reassurance of complete self-congratulatory self-satisfaction. Since White Liberals have no individuality or capacity to think on your own, this warm feeling should be shared by all other White Liberals in the spirit of the CNN reporter who wept when she found out that the author of the misfortune in Boston was not a white man. Our own White Liberal in residence Dr James Davies prayed for a culprit of the Caucasian race.

It is most regrettable that the most timely article did not appear before the regrettable incident in Boston so that those unfortunate enough to have been in the path of destruction could not have as their limbs sailed down a street awash in blood have uttered as their last testament: "Islam is indeed a religion of peace." Or is that piece?

Picked taken inside wilting bouquet
Cutting down trees clearing forests
Nature afraid of being loved

Hugged happy for no particular

Huddled together sharing whispered secrets

I never saw a discontented
Tree resigned to seasoned living
Gripping soiled earth steadfastly standing
Their ground bucking climate change

If you don`t like where
You`re at assert independence choose
To uproot yourself breaking free

Dr Charles Fredrickson: Thailand

.. In Thailand, University rectors have set up working groups to gather reform ideas in six major areas recommended by the National Reform Council - politics, power decentralisation, the justice system, the fight against corruption, education, and science and technology.... Each blue ribbon panel would be chaired by academics and acknowledged experts in their respective fields. The provisional charter identifies 11 areas for reform. The NRC will propose reform ideas to the Constitution Drafting Assembly that will be incorporated in the new charter.
